Some Help You May Be Entitled To This Winter
WINTER HELP - Struggling Claimants can get a Budgeting Advance and can be used to go toward emergency household costs. However, this is a loan and has to be paid back from benefits that have been cut effectively since the ending of the twenty pounds a week Universal Credit uplift.
If you’re struggling and in need of a Budgeting Advance, you’ll need to apply through your Jobcentre Plus work coach.
Who is eligible for a Budgeting Advance?
You have to meet certain criteria to get a Budgeting Advance - so not everyone on Universal Credit will be accepted for one.
To be eligible for the financial help, you must have been getting one of the following benefits for six months or more:
- Universal Credit
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- Income Support
- Income- related Jobseeker’s Allowance
- State Pension Credit
The only time this won’t apply is if you need the money to help you start a new job or keep an existing job.
You must also have earned less than £2,600 (£3,600 jointly for couples) in the past six months and have paid off any previous Budgeting Advances.
The smallest amount you can borrow is £100 and the most is £812 if you have children.
- £348 if you’re single
- £464 if you’re part of a couple
- £812 if you have children
How much you can get depends on whether you can pay the loan back and if you have any savings over £1,000.
The amount you can borrow is reduced by £1 for every £1 you have in savings over the £1,000 threshold.
Household Support Fund
Launched in September the fund has five hundred million pounds to pay for clothing and other household bills. eligible households across the UK can now claim up to £144 through their local council.
The Household Support fund allows you to claim up to £140 in supermarket food vouchers.
Under the fund, some authorities are offering £100 in free cash to families and up to £60 worth of vouchers for children's clothing while others are offering up to £120 in vouchers towards energy bills.
However, some councils are giving families food vouchers to spend at supermarkets like Tesco, Morrisons and Asda.
Help with heating bills. This is known as a ‘Winter Fuel Payment’.
If you were born on or before 26 September 1955 you could get between £100 and £300 to help you pay your heating bills.
You will get your Winter Fuel Payment automatically (you do not need to claim)
To be eligible you need to:
- get the State Pension
- get another social security benefit (not Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction, Child Benefit or Universal Credit)
If you do not get either of these, or if you live abroad, you may need to make a claim.
If you’ve got a Winter Fuel Payment before, you do not need to claim again unless you’ve deferred your State Pension or moved abroad.
The deadline for you to make a claim for winter 2021 to 2022 is 31 March 2022.
When you’ll be paid
Most payments are made automatically in November or December. You should get your money by 14 January 2022.
If you do not get your payment, contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre.
Cold Weather Payment
This is different from a Winter Fuel Payment.
You’ll get a payment if the average temperature in your area is recorded as, or forecast to be, zero degrees Celsius or below over 7 consecutive days.
You’ll get £25 for each 7 day period of very cold weather between 1 November and 31 March.
The Cold Weather Payment scheme runs from 1 November 2021 to 31 March 2022. Check if you can get a payment in your area.
ABC Note: Winter is often defined by meteorologists to be the three calendar months with the lowest average temperatures. This corresponds to the months of December, January and February in the Northern Hemesphere and June, July and August in the Southern Hemisphere.
The coldest average temperatures of the season are typically experienced in January or February in the Northern Hemisphere and in June, July or August in the Southern Hemisphere.

Average Personal Debt in the UK Doubles
PERSONAL DEBT - Feeling you are struggling, you are not alone. Average personal debt in the UK has more than doubled in the last 12 months to over £25,000 per person, new data has revealed.
The exclusive figures have been reported in money.co.uk’s annual debt index, following extensive research by the comparison site into household debt across the UK.
Experts say the drastic increase in 2021 is due largely to the ongoing strain of COVID-19, in addition to a recent increase in living expenses.
Key findings within the report include…
- The average amount of personal debt in 2021 is £25,879 - more than double the figure in 2020 (£9,246)
- Around six in ten (59.7%) consumers admitted to being in debt right now
- Almost a third (31.74%) of debt incurred this year has been due to the coronavirus pandemic
- Men (£35,013) have more the twice the average debt of women (£14,911)
- Londoners also have the highest level of personal debt in the country, with average losses of £53,960 per person

HMRC & Tax Returns
TAX RETURNS - This year, nearly three thousand people submitted their tax return on Christmas Day, according to HMRC, ahead of the self-assessment deadline on January 31st.
The peak time was between 12:00 and 12:59, with 227 people submitting their tax returns while the rest of us prepared Christmas dinner.
In total, over 31,000 Brits submitted their tax returns between Christmas Eve and Boxing Day, with Christmas Eve being the most popular of the three days with 19,802 tax returns filed.
If you haven’t completed your tax returns yet, you have a few days left. Luckily, experts at money.co.uk have put together some handy tips to guide you through the process:
James Andrews, Senior Personal Finance editor at money.co.uk, said: “We’re told to complete our self-assessment tax returns well in advance of the deadline on January 31st, as it can take several weeks to source the correct paperwork. But life doesn’t always work out that way.
“In recent years a surprising number of people have been filing their tax returns on Christmas Day, with 2,828 doing exactly that this year.
“Between cooking Christmas dinner and dealing with in-laws and excited children, most people want to avoid the stress of finances on the biggest holiday of the year. However, there is actually a logical reason for people to submit their taxes during the festive season.
“For many people in the business sector, the 25th and 26th are their only days off from trading. It’s less a tradition to file taxes during the holiday season, or an escape from the chaos and more because it’s the only time they are free. This way they can focus on the New Year once they return to work.
“If you don’t fancy completing your tax return on Christmas day, you have until January 31st, 2022, to complete it online. The deadline for paper returns has already passed.
“For anyone who hasn’t submitted an online tax return before, the first thing you need to do is register with the government website. However, this process can take up to three weeks, so it’s worth getting started as soon as you can.
“The most common mistake people make with tax returns is submitting an incorrect tax code. If HMRC have the wrong details, you could end up paying too much, or too little, so check you have the right code before you start the process.
“Once you’ve confirmed your tax code, the next step is to complete the online self-assessment form on the government website here. To complete it, you’ll need to gather all the relevant paperwork and documents, which can include your P60, P45, P11D or a P9D. You might also need to provide a summary of any rental income and expenses or statements of earnings from savings and investment.
“If you’ve overpaid tax it’s relatively easy to claim it back. You shouldn’t need to use a third-party company, in fact, you can check whether it’s worth claiming a tax rebate completely free using the HMRC tax checker.
“HMRC can also provide tax credits if you require financial assistance. These are payments from the government to help with the cost of living. You can check if you’re eligible for tax credits via the HMRC website, or you can visit the Citizens Advice Bureau for additional guidance.
“If you already receive tax credits, you are required to renew your application every year to ensure your details are correct. You can manage your status here.”

DEBT - Personal debt more than doubles in 12 months
2021 debt index from money.co.uk shows the average Brit will end the year with total debts of more than £25,000. Ouch!
Personal finances continue to suffer under the strain of COVID-19, with the ongoing pandemic and recent increase in living expenses causing the average UK personal debt to more than double in the space of just 12 months.
The figures have been revealed in money.co.uk’s annual debt index, following extensive research by the comparison site into household debt across the UK.

The findings are.
Around six in ten (59.7%) consumers admitted to being in debt right now, not counting mortgages, with the average amount owed in the UK in 2021 coming in at £25,879 per person - more than double the figure in 2020 (£9,246).
Almost a third (32.24%) of debt incurred this year has been due to living expenses such as bills and food, down from 35% last year, while the coronavirus pandemic accounted for another 31.74%, down from 36% in 2020.
Notably, the number of people citing redundancy as a result of coronavirus as the reason for their debt has jumped from 7.8% last year, to 9.72% in 2021, which is a possible outcome of the furlough scheme coming to an end on September 30.
The data reveals that men (£35,013) have more than twice the debt of women (£14,911), while Brits aged between 35-44 have more debt than any other age group, averaging £53,283 per person.
According to the figures, COVID-19 continues to account for a large amount of personal debt, with the average Brit attributing £19,203 of their deficit to loss of earnings as a result of the pandemic.
When it comes to alternative causes of debt, almost two thirds of people (63.98%) blamed living expenses and the pandemic for their debt in 2021, and more than one in five (21.86%) attributed their losses to the expenditure of Christmas 2021.
James Andrews, senior personal finance editor at money.co.uk, said: “Given the challenges faced by consumers in the past 12 months, it’s no surprise personal debt is high, but for it to more than double in a year to £25,879 a person is extreme.
“Almost two years on, nearly a third of consumers still attribute their losses to the pandemic, while a fraction more say that living costs are the main cause of their debt. This will come as no surprise to anyone who has tried to change their gas or electricity supplier or filled up their car in the past few months; prices are at an all time high and show no signs of dropping in the foreseeable future.
“If you’re struggling with multiple types of debt, putting the most important debts first is key. Missing repayments on secured debts, such as a mortgage, may result in your home being repossessed while not paying council tax can result in you being put in prison. These should be top of the list.
“If you would like help prioritising, or are struggling to meet payments, there are free services available that will help you review your finances. Citizens Advice will offer free, impartial advice, or alternatively you can contact a debt charity like Step Change who will be able to offer support.”
Regional breakdowns
Research found key differences in the levels of debt incurred across different regions in Britain, with almost three quarters (72.62%) of people in the Greater London region ending 2021 in debt, more than any other area in the UK. Londoners also have the highest level of personal debt in the country, a staggering £53,960 per person.
The coronavirus pandemic continued to negatively affect peoples’ finances in the capital, with more than one in five residents (21.99%) saying their debt was directly due to furlough, a scheme to support wages which ended in September.
A further 14.14% said redundancy as a result of coronavirus was to blame, while an additional 11.39% of residents cited coronavirus generally as the reason for their losses. In total, Londoners reported that £42,927 of their current debt has arisen as a result of loss of earnings during the COVID-19 pandemic.
When it comes to individual UK cities, more people in Belfast are ending 2021 in debt than any other place (67.86%), however they do have the lowest average debt figure per person at £6,381. The city with the greatest debt per person is Southampton, where residents have average losses of a whopping £62,301.
Residents of Southampton said a huge £42,927 of their debt has arisen as a result of loss of earnings during the COVID-19 pandemic, adding that normal living expenses (38%) Christmas 2021 (22%) and debt consolidation (22%) were also to blame for their losses.

New Year, New Debt
Almost six in ten Brits (59.7%) are set to end 2021 in debt, according to the research.
The study of British adults commissioned by money.co.uk in December 2021 shows that the average person will end 2021 with £25,879 worth of total debt – up a staggering 179.9% compared to the 2020 average of £9,246.
Almost a third of respondents (31.12%) said they took out at least one additional credit card or loan in the past year to pay off debt incurred due to the COVID-19. Meanwhile the average credit card debt is now £3,276, up from £2,465 last year.
Just over half (50.1%) of people said they were in a worse financial position entering 2021 than they were in 12 months previously. A majority of younger people said their finances had improved over the past 12 months, while those aged 45+ reported worsening finances.
When it comes to managing debt over time, the average consumer has been in debt for just over two years, and it will take an average of three years to pay it off completely, with the average Brit spending up to 20% of their wage on repaying their debt.
What type of debt are we ending the year with?
More than three in ten of Brits (31.75%) attributed their debt to credit cards, which is down from 34.47% last year.
Personal loans (15.60%), overdrafts (14.15%), car loans (10.95%) and white goods payment plans (10.35%) were the other most common types of debt that Brits ended 2021 with.
Meanwhile Payday loans and product payment plans accounted for 27.45% of debt, according to the statistics.

People In Work Get a Christmas Universal Credit Cash Boost Because of Rishi Sunak's Autumn Budget
CASH BOOST - Families claiming Universal Credit will be in for a DWP cash boost to hit their accounts by Christmas, the government has confirmed.
The extra money is the first sign of changes which will bring an annual increase of one thousand, one hundred pounds per annum.
The changes had been due to come in on December 1, but were brought in a week earlier, on November 24.
The changes had been announced in Rishi Sunak's Autumn Budget. They will increase the work allowance as well as lowering the taper rate.
The work allowance is the amount you can earn in wages before your Universal Credit is affected. This has gone up from £293 to £335 if your Universal Credit includes housing support and from £515 to £557 if it doesn't.
This change will only benefit those lucky enough to be in work and ignores many people who are disabled, carers, out of work, and those still on legacy benefits.
In addition, the higher work allowance means more people will now qualify for Universal Credit.

FAILURE TO PAY MINIMUM WAGES - This is the thin end of the wedge. The reality is that many companies pay workers in cash and frequently below the minimum wage, in particular in the take-a-way food delivery business. It's common in practice. Cancel the Cut to Universal Credit – Unite Community Whistle-Stop Tour of Red Wall Towns and Cities
UNIVERSAL CREDIT CUTS - Do you want to fight the cuts says Unite.
The chancellor has announced that in the coming weeks the taper rate will be reduced to 55p, which would mean that workers would take home 8p more of an extra pound earned. Also, the work allowances for eligible claimants will go up by £500 a year.
However if you don't have a job thats not much use.
Unite Community is kicking off a whistle-stop tour of red wall seats. The first one was yesterday but it is starting properly next week.
