Inflation Rises To 3.1%, Causing More Pain with Food and Travel Costs Increasing
The Consumer Prices Index including owner occupiers’ housing costs (CPIH) 12-month inflation rate was 2.8% in November 2017, unchanged from October 2017.
The Consumer Prices Index (CPI) 12-month rate was 3.1% in November 2017, up from 3.0% in October 2017; it was last higher in March 2012.
The largest upward contribution to change in both the CPIH and CPI rates came from air fares which fell between October and November but by less than a year ago.
Rising prices for a range of recreational and cultural goods and services, most notably computer games, also had an upward effect.
Falling prices in the miscellaneous goods and services category (covering products such as travel goods and financial services) provided the largest offsetting downward contribution.
The annual inflation rate has more than doubled from 1.2% to 3.1% in the past year – its highest level since March 2012 – largely as a result of the fall in the value of the pound following the EU referendum in June 2016.
Under the terms of its independence, the Bank of England is obliged to keep inflation within one percentage point of the government’s 2% target.
Latest Stats - Unemployed Fall but Those Economically Inactive Increase

There were 32.08 million people in work, 56,000 fewer than for May to July 2017 but 325,000 more than for a year earlier.
The employment rate (the proportion of people aged from 16 to 64 who were in work) was 75.1%, lower than for May to July 2017 (75.3%) but higher than for a year earlier (74.4%).
There were 1.43 million unemployed people (people not in work but seeking and available to work), 26,000 fewer than for May to July 2017 and 182,000 fewer than for a year earlier.
The unemployment rate (the proportion of those in work plus those unemployed, that were unemployed) was 4.3%, down from 4.8% for a year earlier and the joint lowest since 1975.
There were 8.86 million people aged from 16 to 64 who were economically inactive (not working and not seeking or available to work), 115,000 more than for May to July 2017 but 56,000 fewer than for a year earlier.
The inactivity rate (the proportion of people aged from 16 to 64 who were economically inactive) was 21.5%, higher than for May to July 2017 (21.2%) but lower than for a year earlier (21.7%).

Stirling Council to Provide Additional Support for Universal Credit Claimants
Stirling Council are to create a new group that’ll support residents receiving Universal Credit.
The group will focus on how claimants interact with the local authority and how they’re supported by council services.
They’ll report back in six months with any suggestions or enhancements required.
Universal Credit was piloted in the city back in 2015 and was then fully implemented in June this year.
The establishment of the group was recommended to Full Council via a motion by Community Planning and Regeneration Convenor Chris Kane.
Image: Cllr Kane
Cllr Kane said, “Universal Credit was rolled out in Stirling on 28th June and what became apparent very quickly was that it was having a big impact across multiple council services.
“This Short Life Working Group has cross party support and will look at how we resource our services and our staff, who are doing an excellent job under challenging circumstances.
“We need to ensure council policies and procedures are robust, flexible and able to provide support and mitigation to those who need our help the most.”
As Universal Credit can only be claimed online, Stirling Council Libraries are providing access to IT and digital support and offering free training in digital skills.

Sleep in the Park - A Mass Sleepout to End Homelessness in Scotland
Sleep in the Park, Edidburgh, is an initiative of parent charity Social Bite.
9,000 people have been invited to take part in an initiative designed on the 9th of December to end homelessness in Scotland.
Social Bite, the charity that pioneered the event feed around 150 homeless people every day. They also open up our shops for “Social Suppers” in the evenings, where they invite homeless people to sit in for hot food and engage them in support services to help them out of the situation.
Image: Artist Liam Gallager & campaigners Sir Bob Geldof are taking part.
The Charity has created an academy to take homeless people from the streets, and take them through a process of support – all the way to full time employment. The academy involves helping them find accommodation, providing training, qualifications, work experience and ultimately a full time paying job. Social Bite aim to help 10 homeless people off the streets and put them through our academy on an annual basis, really breaking the cycle.
Taking part in Sleep in the Park are musicians, Liam Gallagher, Amy Macdonald, Deacon Blue and Frightened Rabbit. John Cleese is writing and performing a comedy bedtime stories. Breakfast Rolls is being attended by Rob Bryden and various government ministers.
Image: A chilly night in store for participants.
Sir Bob Geldof will be addressing the crowd, in what could be a chilly but inspiring event.

Companies With Scrooge Bosses Failing To Pay Minimum Wage Are...
The two household names – Primark and Sports Direct – have had to pay thousands of pounds back to staff for paying them below the minimum wage. Of the 260 firms named on the Government's list for paying their staff below the legal minimum, the two retailers were among those who had to repay the most. Primark had to repay £231,973.12 mainly due to charging staff for uniforms. Meanwhile Sports Direct, and two staff agencies it used, had to pay back a total of £1.1m to their workers. All firms said the issues were now rectified. A spokesperson for Primark, which is owned by Associated British Foods, said its uniform policy changed last year and that it "had reviewed its procedures in order to avoid this situation re-occurring." They said the average amount paid to the almost 10,000 staff affected was £23.75. Sports Direct – together with the two agencies, Transline and Best Connection which it used to supply its staff – underpaid more than 4,000 staff in total. The retailer said the underpayment related to a "historical situation in our warehouse that was widely publicised in 2016".
Overall, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy said 16,000 workers had not received at least the minimum wage in its latest list, which it publishes twice a year. The department said this was the highest number of employees affected since it first published the list in 2013. The most common reasons for firms underpaying staff were failing to pay workers when they were travelling between jobs, not paying overtime and deducting money from staff pay for uniforms.
The current minimum wage rates are:
- National Living Wage (25 years and over) - £7.20 per hour
- adult rate of National Minimum Wage (21 years and over) - £6.70 per hour
- 18 to 20-year olds - £5.30 per hour
- 16 to 17-year olds - £3.87 per hour
- apprentice rate - £3.30 per hour
The apprentice rate applies to apprentices aged 16 to 18 years and those aged 19 years and over who are in their first year. All other apprentices are entitled to the National Minimum Wage rate for their age.
The government is committed to increasing compliance with minimum wage legislation and effective enforcement of it. Everyone who is entitled to the minimum wage should receive it.

Stockport Council Issues Christmas Tips
Many of the things we enjoy over the Christmas period such as fairy lights, candles, paper hats and decorations can all be fire hazards when proper care is not taken.
Essential tips include:
- Extinguish candles before going to bed and never leave them burning unattended or on/near a Christmas tree, curtains or soft furnishings
- Buy enough batteries to fit in new toys and other Christmas gifts to avoid the temptation of removing batteries from a smoke alarm
- Keep decorations and cards away from fires and heat sources, such as light fittings
- Check your Christmas tree lights conform to the British Standard and don’t overload electric sockets
- Most fires start in the kitchen, so don’t leave cooking unattended and keep the cooker clear of items, including tea towels
- Never put tree branches or needles in a fireplace or wood burning stove
- Check on elderly relatives and neighbours
Also, it's always important to remember the risks of buying fake goods since many of them don’t meet safety standards. If something seems too much of a bargain, it’s probably poor quality, fake or doesn’t exist. If you’re buying tickets, always buy from official sources and never pay by direct transfer.

Councillor Sheila Bailey, Stockport Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, said: “We want to make sure residents are safe during the holidays, so I’d urge our local communities to follow these simple tips to avoid fire accidents or becoming a victim of a scam. Let’s also look out for each other, especially older relatives and neighbours who might need a hand as the weather gets colder.”
Coventry Student Helps Launch Mission Christmas Campaign
This Christmas, Free Radio Cash for Kids have launched their first ever Mission Christmas campaign.
The aim is to gather as many new and unwrapped presents for young, disadvantaged people in the West Midlands up to the age of 18 as possible.
Already making a difference is Roma, a young girl living in Coventry, who has decided to give up her birthday presents and donate them to 'Mission Christmas'.
Roma said: "There are people like myself who get so many presents on their birthday and I know there are children out there who don’t even get one, I just wanted to help".
With the help from Free Radio, Coventry BID and Coventry City Council’s ‘Looked After Children' and Participation Teams, over 500 presents are hoped to be gathered in time for Christmas.
The drop-off point for gifts will be at the Coventry BID offices at the Old Grammar School in Bishop Street, Coventry. Presents can be handed in between 11am and 3pm, Monday to Friday until Wednesday, December 13.
Councillor Ed Ruane, Cabinet Member for Children's Services said: "It's great to see Free Radio's Mission Christmas 2017 campaign being launched this year, as it'll hopefully make a big difference to local children in poverty.
"We have specifically linked this year with our own Children's Services and Looked After Children Teams and colleagues to encourage local businesses and local people to donate presents to this fantastic cause.
"I hope the campaign is extremely successful and helps make this a great Christmas for as many children in Coventry and Warwickshire as possible".
Tom Reeves, Charity Fundraising Executive for Free Radio said "Cash for Kids are thrilled to have the support of Coventry City Council and Coventry BID for our first ever Mission Christmas.
"We hope to ensure every child living in poverty in Coventry and Warwickshire has both a smile on their face and a gift to open this Christmas day."
In true Coventry spirit, all of the money and presents donated will stay within the city by going to local, deserving children.
