Statistics showing record use of foodbanks in Scotland are a “damning indictment” of the failures of the UK Government which should leave the Tories “deeply ashamed”, SNP Social Justice Secretary Alex Neil said today.
The Trussell Trust, the largest providers of food parcels, saw the number of three-day emergency food parcels needed in Scotland increase by 13% in the last year.
The charity issued more than 130,000 supplies of food in 2015/16, an increase from 117,689 in the previous year.
A report by the Trussell Trust highlighted benefits delays as the main reason people turned to food banks – with benefit sanctions and delays to Universal Credit payments to blame.
