Are You Eligible For A Free TV Licence?

TV LICENCE - What can I watch without a TV Licence?

Without a licence, you can legally watch:

Netflix.

YouTube.

Amazon Prime.

DVDs/Blurays.

Non-BBC catch-up including ITV Player, Channel 4 on-demand, as long as it's NOT live

Free TV licences can be claimed by viewers - if they are in receipt of certain Government benefits.

A TV licence is required in the UK if a homeowner wants to watch or record TV on any channel.

Currently, it costs £159 for a colour licence and £53.50 for a black and white licence.

People who do not purchase a TV licence can be prosecuted and fined.

Those who can apply for the completely free licence are those who are over 75 years old and receive pension credit.

This is an additional benefit to those on the state pension who are on low income.

TV licence discounts

Some license fee holders are able to get discounts or reductions on the cost:

  • People who are registered blind or if they live with someone who is - 50 per cent discount
  • If you are in residential care, disabled or retired and over 60, you can also get a special licence for £7.50 (eligible accommodation only - see licensing website for details)
  • Students who are only in their accommodation for the academic year can claim back 25 per cent of the cost.
