Job Losses Anticipated As Furlough Scheme Winds Down

TROUBLE COMING - Thousands of people are facing the prospect of redundancy as the Government furlough scheme winds down, industry figures reveal.

Almost one in five firms have said they plan to let staff go as the furlough support tapers off and employers are left with increasing wage bills.

The policy is due to change on Sunday, 1 August, with employers now asked to contribute 20 per cent towards the wages of employees currently being subsidised by the state.

1.9 million people were still furloughed by the end of June, a reduction from 2.4 million a month earlier.

Those aged 65 or over make up the highest proportion of staff still on furlough, according to HM Revnue and Customs figures released last week.

Meanwhile Inflation is surging.
