Double Amputee Has Benefits Stopped 'For Missing Two Appointments

SANCTIONS - A man who had to have both legs amputated due to sepsis has been left without benefits after he said he missed two work capability assessments.

Richard Connett, 55, has not received his employment and support allowance since September after he says he received a sanction for missing two appointments.

Richard, who is diabetic, had to have both legs amputated after he developed sepsis following complications with an ulcer on his leg.

He said that he faced sanctions in December last year for not returning forms he received through the post, due to being in hospital to have his leg removed.

On that occasion, he says he later received a back payment of his benefits from December 2018 to May 2019 after it was ruled that his benefits should not have been stopped.

But the 55-year-old, of Outer Circle Drive, Lincoln, now says that he now potentially faces a further seven weeks without a source of income.

He said: "I've had sepsis four times in the last two years, so I consider myself very lucky to be here.

"I didn't receive any letters regarding an appointment and when I rang to query why, I was told that everything was fine and that I would be contacted to arrange another appointment.

"I didn't receive a phone call and when I next rang I was told it was too late and the matter had to go to a tribunal.

"I haven't received any ESA (Employment and Support Allowance) payment since September. I do still receive my PIP (Personal Independence Payment) but this is now having to go on bills and surviving.

"My housing officer has agreed to wait for my rent as long as I pay a token £10 towards it.

"My aunt has given me some money for food, which I'll be paying back when my PIP comes through. I now just have to wait for the outcome, which I feel is completely unfair.

A DWP spokesperson said: "We want disabled people and those with health conditions to get the support they need. However, if someone misses appointments without good reason, it can affect their claim.

"Mr Connett continues to receive PIP, which provides support for his additional mobility needs, and he can apply for other support he feels he is entitled to.
