Boris Past the Post
Tuesday 23 July, 2019 Written by With help from The Institute for GovernmentThe biggest parliamentary challenge facing Boris Johnson the new PM is a tiny working majority in the House of Commons. Theresa May’s initial working majority of 13 has steadily eroded due to defections and resignations. It currently stands at just four MPs (as Tory MP Charlie Elphicke has been suspended from the party pending criminal investigation).
The Government’s majority may decrease further if the Conservatives lose the Brecon and Radnorshire by-election in August. Even with no majority the government can still govern unless they lose a 'No Confidence' vote.
The focus is likely to be all on Brexit, with little wriggle room to do more. Boris needs a General Election and a majority, but Jeremy Corbyn is convinced he can win it. The Lib Dems are on a roll and so are the Greens in a four-horse race.
Will Boris Johnson help the poorest? It looks likely we will simply see more tax cuts for rich people.
Lacking much in the way of common-sense, and not being one for detail, Boris Johnson could be providing plenty of entertainment along the way.
