Gig Economy Doubles In Size

Today, a report by the TUC and the University of Hertfordshire has revealed that the British gig economy has more than doubled in the past three years and now accounts for nearly 5 million workers. In 2016, it was found that one in 20 working adults were employed in the gig economy and now a tenth of working adults are in this arena.

Although the gig economy sparks images of deliveroo and uber drivers, the arena is by no means limited to the field of those working in the services industry. 4.3 million middle class (ABC 1) workers have made the jump to working freelance from the traditional nine-to-five. These employees work in a range of industries including fintech, finance and medicine and choose to work as freelance consultants as it is more lucrative. Not only is the flexible work style beneficial to the individuals, but also to the country - in 2016, the gig economy was reported to contribute £119 billion to the UK economy.
