Free Cash Withdrawal ATMs Disappearing From the UK High Street
Wednesday 01 May, 2019 Written by IoD‘Free cash withdrawals’ ATM machines have been disappearing across the UK at a rapid rate, according to a new study by Which? It has revealed that nearly 1,700 machines started charging the public for cash withdrawals in the first three months of the year.
It is expected that the number of paid ATMs will increase, which could mean the UK losing as many as 13% of its free cash withdrawal points in only a couple of months.
The move follows a change in regulation which saw a reduction in the fee ATM operators receive from banks when cash is withdrawn. Which? has called for regulators to act on this, with the spokesperson stating that “Communities are being stripped of free access to cash at an alarming rate that could hit the most vulnerable in our society the hardest, while denying millions of people free withdrawals.”
ABC Note: bad news for those who rely on cash to make payments.
