German Retailer Lidl Has Overtaken Waitrose

The popularity of discount supermarkets among UK consumers appears to be showing no sign of letting up with today’s news that German retailer Lidl has overtaken Waitrose to become the seventh biggest supermarket chain. Its popularity with families, at a time where incomes are remaining stubbornly stagnant, has helped the discount retailer grow by almost 19% in the past 3 months and its market share has also increased to over 5%. Fellow German discount supermarket, Aldi has also been performing well with sales increasing by 17.2% making it the fifth biggest chain, according to the figures from consumer research company Kantar Worldpanel. At the nation’s top 4 supermarkets - Tesco’s, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrisons - sales have also increased despite their share of the market being reduced.
